18 Trains Lose Superfast Status: Big Fare Changes Coming!
Indian Railways will downgrade 18 long-distance trains to Express status in 2027 due to speed issues, leading to lower ticket fares for passengers.

Indian Railways has officially announced a superfast status removal for 18 long-distance train services, effective from January 1, 2027. This significant reclassification means these services will be downgraded from 'Superfast' to regular 'Express' status.
Why is the Superfast Status Being Revoked?
The decision comes after a comprehensive performance review by railway authorities. According to Railway Board guidelines, a train must maintain a mandatory average speed of at least 55 kmph to retain its Superfast designation.
The review determined that these 18 trains have failed to meet this speed benchmark. The primary reasons cited for this decline in velocity include:
- Increased operational delays
- Higher levels of track congestion
- The addition of multiple intermediate stoppages
Major Trains Affected by the Downgrade
While 18 trains in total will be impacted, several prominent long-distance services are among those losing their status. These include:
- Sapt Kranti Express: Running between Anand Vihar Terminal and Muzaffarpur.
- Shramjeevi Express: Operating from New Delhi to Rajgir.
- Mahanagari Express: Connecting Mumbai CSMT to Banaras.
- Tulsi Express: Running between Lokmanya Tilak Terminus and Ayodhya Cantt.
- Pragati Express: Operating between CSMT and Pune.
- Purnagiri Jan Shatabdi Express
Good News for Passengers: Lower Ticket Fares
Although the speed classification is changing, passengers will see a direct financial benefit. Because the mandatory 'Superfast' surcharge will be eliminated, ticket prices will decrease across various classes.
Estimated savings for travelers include:
- Sleeper Class: Approximately ₹30 reduction.
- AC Classes: Approximately ₹45 reduction (includes 3AC, 3AC Economy, 2AC, and AC Chair Car).
- First AC and Executive Class: Savings of up to ₹75.
What Travelers Need to Know for 2027
It is important to note that while the classification and fares are changing, the existing schedules and stopping patterns for these services are expected to remain exactly the same.
However, to facilitate this transition, the railway administration will assign new identification numbers to all 18 affected trains. Passengers planning to travel on or after January 1, 2027, are strongly advised to use these updated train numbers when booking to avoid any potential errors in their travel arrangements.
