Tanakpur Railway Station (TPU) is rapidly evolving into a vital transport hub, significantly expanding its operational capacity to serve a diverse range of passengers. From pilgrims and students to local traders, the station is now more connected than ever to major urban centers across the country.
New Direct Links to Nanded and Beyond
In a major move to enhance religious and regional connectivity, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently flagged off the Tanakpur-Nanded Express. This new service was introduced following specific requests from the Sikh community, providing much-needed direct access to Hazur Sahib.
The expansion isn't limited to long-distance religious routes. The station has also seen significant improvements in regional connectivity through several key service updates:
- Shahjahanpur Extension: The Tanakpur-Pilibhit service has been extended all the way to Shahjahanpur.
- Agra Regularization: The Tanakpur-Agra service has now been regularized, ensuring more predictable travel for commuters.
- Affordable Passenger Service: A new passenger service between Shahjahanpur and Tanakpur has been introduced, offering a highly affordable fare of just ₹35.
Improved Connectivity for the Kumaon Region
Following a formal request by Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, the Union Railways Ministry has approved a significant boost for regional travel. The Achhnera-Tanakpur Express (Train Nos. 15093/15094) will now have a regular halt at Banbasa station. This decision is expected to greatly improve movement across the Kumaon region.

With the influx of new routes, Tanakpur manages a variety of essential services that connect the station to major destinations. Passengers can rely on several key trains, including:
- Purnagiri Jan Shatabdi (12035): Providing a reliable link to Old Delhi.
- Triveni Express (15074/15076): Connecting passengers to Lucknow and Shaktinagar.
- TPU-DDN Express (15020): A crucial link to Dehradun.
- TPU-Mathura Special (05062): Offering specialized connectivity to Mathura.
As the station continues to manage high demand—highlighted by the massive scale of special train operations seen during peak seasons—these new routes and regularized services mark a significant milestone in making Tanakpur a more accessible gateway for travelers.
