Gaya: New Tankuppa Station Underpass Approved

The Indian Railways has officially sanctioned the construction of a vital Tankuppa Station underpass near the eastern cabin of the station in Gaya, Bihar. This strategic infrastructure project, situated between pole numbers 449/4 and 449/5, is set to transform local travel and significantly boost safety for the region.

A Lifeline for 25 Nearby Villages

For years, the residents of approximately 20 to 25 villages in the Tankuppa block have faced severe connectivity issues. Without a designated railway gate or an overbridge, locals have been forced to cross the tracks at great personal risk. Tragically, this lack of safe passage has resulted in several fatalities in the area.

The new underpass promises to be a game-changer for commuters. Once completed, it will provide a secure route for:

  • Pedestrians
  • Motorcyclists
  • Auto-rickshaws
  • Small and medium-sized vehicles

Beyond safety, the project offers massive time and distance savings. Currently, residents must take a detour of nearly 30 kilometers to bypass the tracks; the new underpass will slash this journey down to just 5 kilometers.

Political Advocacy and Project Status

The approval comes after persistent advocacy by Union Minister and Gaya Member of Parliament, Jitan Ram Manjhi. On February 13, 2025, the Minister formally wrote to Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw to highlight the life-threatening hazards and connectivity gaps faced by the citizens of the Tankuppa block.

Furthermore, Nandlal Manjhi, the MP representative for the Gaya parliamentary constituency, presented 18 critical railway-related proposals to the Dhanbad Rail Division during a parliamentary committee meeting. He acted on behalf of the Gaya-Dhanbad Grand Chord Railway Sangharsh Samiti to ensure these local needs were addressed.

The Dhanbad Rail Division has confirmed that the tender process is now complete. Construction is expected to commence shortly, and authorities have indicated that the official foundation stone laying ceremony will be announced in the near future.
