Tatanagar Station Insurance Now via Digital Form

Passengers booking tickets at the Tatanagar Railway Station in Jamshedpur will notice a significant change in their reservation process. Effective from Wednesday, October 28, 2026, a new reservation form has been introduced at the station's two booking counters, offering a new Tatanagar station insurance option for travelers.

Following a Supreme Court Mandate

The introduction of this insurance feature is not a local decision but follows a national directive from the Supreme Court. The court had ordered Indian Railways to ensure that insurance coverage is available for all counter-booked tickets by October 27, 2026. This legal requirement was a direct response to a petition filed following the tragic train accident in Odisha in June 2023.

Insurance Coverage and Cost Details

The new policy is designed to provide essential security for commuters. Here are the specific details regarding the coverage:

  • Coverage Amount: The policy provides coverage of up to ₹10 lakh.
  • Premium Cost: The cost is approximately 45 paise per person, including all applicable taxes.
  • Mobile Requirement: To receive policy details, passengers must provide a valid mobile number.
  • Cancellation Terms: If a ticket is cancelled, ₹0.09 will be deducted from the premium in addition to the standard railway cancellation fees.

The Digital-Only Payment Mandate

A key highlight of this new system is that the insurance premium must be paid exclusively through digital modes. The Railway Board has explained that this digital mandate was implemented because small-denomination coins are no longer considered legal tender. Consequently, collecting nominal cash amounts like 45 paise at the counters is no longer practical for station staff.

To support this integration, the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS) has successfully updated the reservation infrastructure to accommodate these digital transactions.

Concerns Over the Digital Divide

While the move aims to enhance passenger safety, it has sparked concerns among regular commuters at Tatanagar. Many travelers have voiced worries regarding the digital-only requirement, pointing out that a significant number of passengers do not own smartphones or have reliable access to digital payment platforms.

Commuters have urged railway authorities to find a solution that extends these insurance benefits to those who still prefer to make their ticket payments in cash, ensuring no traveler is left unprotected due to a lack of digital access.
