Tatanagar Station Redevelopment: Bagbera Quarters to be Demolished

The Tatanagar Station redevelopment project is entering a critical phase as the Railway Engineering Department prepares to demolish several railway quarters in the Bagbera area. This massive infrastructure push, estimated at ₹348 crore, aims to modernize the station area and facilitate extensive road widening.

Clearing the Way for Modernization

To prepare for the upcoming demolition, the railway administration has already successfully vacated the targeted quarters in Bagbera. This clearance is essential to make room for the expanded station layout and improved road connectivity as part of the ongoing expansion and redevelopment plan.

Anti-Encroachment Drive Intensifies

In addition to the housing demolition, authorities are aggressively clearing roadside encroachments near TOP Chowk. On October 27, 2026, railway officials removed multiple shops and imposed fines on business owners operating along the station periphery. This action is part of a broader anti-encroachment drive that has been ongoing since early 2026, with significant removals recorded along the Bagbera-Kitadih road.

Major Infrastructure Upgrades

The current works are part of a much larger, long-term development effort for the station. The massive investment includes several key components:

  • New Platforms: The construction of four new platforms is valued at approximately ₹306 crore.
  • Vande Bharat Depot: A modern Vande Bharat coach depot is being developed at an estimated cost of ₹384 crore.

Official Oversight and Local Impact

The prospect of further clearance operations at Station Chowk, Kitadih, and Khasmahal Road has caused significant anxiety among local shopkeepers. To ensure the project stays on schedule, South Eastern Railway Deputy General Manager Manish Jain conducted an inspection on October 5, 2026, reviewing the progress of the four-lane road construction and directing officials to expedite the work.

Chakradharpur DRM Tarun Huria is also coordinating the implementation of station building and parking site upgrades to ensure the transition remains on schedule.
