Thakurganj Prepares to Become a Vital Junction on the Delhi Guwahati Rail Corridor
Thakurganj is transforming into a major railway junction as part of the Indian government's ambitious multi-tracking project to supercharge connectivity between Delhi and Northeast India. This massive infrastructure initiative will upgrade the existing double-line rail corridor into a robust four-line network, significantly reducing travel times and easing congestion for passengers travelling across the country.
The ambitious railway upgrade brings several transformative changes for passengers and the region. A 24.40-kilometer new broad-gauge line connecting Thakurganj and Chatarhat is undergoing final location surveys and soil testing. Chatarhat sits on the Aluabari Road-New Jalpaiguri section, where a separate 57-kilometer third and fourth line project is officially approved. The Kishanganj district administration issued a preliminary land acquisition notification in August 2026 for doubling the Araria-Galgalia rail line. The broader multi-tracking project spans six Bihar districts including West Champaran, East Champaran, Sitamarhi, Darbhanga, Supaul, and Araria. Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw shared a route map showing the network runs from Delhi through Gorakhpur, Narkatiaganj, Raxaul, Sitamarhi, Saraigarh, Araria, and New Jalpaiguri to Guwahati.
Regional Expansion and Project Timelines
Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed that four-track expansion work is moving at a fast pace. Construction on a second railway bridge over the Brahmaputra at Saraighat is scheduled to begin soon. On August 19, 2026, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs approved four separate multi-tracking projects worth approximately 9,450 crore rupees, targeting completion by the 2030-31 fiscal year across West Bengal, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu.
Local Development at Thakurganj Station
Right at home, the Thakurganj railway station is getting a massive makeover. Under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, an investment of approximately 87.80 crore rupees is transforming the station facilities. Roughly 60 percent of the work is already complete, with full completion expected by early 2027.
Despite the excitement, local developments have faced minor hurdles. The Rail Yatri Samiti raised concerns about the width of the main station entrance, and residents protested to preserve a tree at the construction site. On the brighter side, in June 2026, the Ministry of Railways sanctioned 916.18 crore rupees for doubling the 56.41-kilometer Thakurganj-Siliguri rail section. Local MP Devesh Chandra Thakur and BJP state working committee member Vishal Kumar warmly welcomed this sanction, promising a brighter travel future for local commuters.
