Thakurganj railway station located in Bihar is set to be transformed into a major junction as part of the ambitious Delhi-Guwahati rail corridor multi-tracking initiative. This comprehensive infrastructure project aims to significantly improve connectivity across North Bihar and the Seemanchal region. The Union government is actively executing this massive rail expansion plan to streamline passenger travel and freight movement between the national capital and the Northeast. Union Rail Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has confirmed that the project route covers Delhi, Gorakhpur, Narkatiaganj, Raxaul, Sitamarhi, Saraigarh, Araria, New Jalpaiguri, and Guwahati, bringing massive developmental benefits to districts including Western Champaran, Eastern Champaran, Sitamarhi, Darbhanga, Supaul, and Araria. Key highlights of the initiative include the modernization of Thakurganj and Kishanganj stations under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme with a completion deadline of early 2027, active surveys for new broad gauge lines, and multiple track doubling projects across the region.
Under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, approximately 60 percent of construction work at Thakurganj and Kishanganj stations is already complete. The master plan heavily focuses on constructing new platforms and laying additional tracks to handle rising passenger footfall. Furthermore, infrastructure progress includes an active Final Location Survey and soil testing for the
24.40 km Thakurganj-Chhatarhat broad gauge line, which will establish a vital link between Araria and New Jalpaiguri. Additional doubling initiatives such as the Araria-Thakurganj section, the
56 km Thakurganj-Siliguri section, and the
19 km Thakurganj-Aluabari Road section are currently progressing through various stages of survey and approval. To fast-track these works, the Kishanganj district administration issued a land acquisition notification for the Araria-Thakurganj line in August 2026.
Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma has strongly advocated for a four-lane rail route between Guwahati and Delhi to accelerate both freight and passenger movement. Local MP Devesh Chandra Thakur has acknowledged the efforts of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Minister Vaishnaw in expanding regional railway infrastructure. Railway officials underscored the strategic importance of Thakurganj station for seamless connectivity to North Bengal and the Northeast during an inspection in July 2026. Meanwhile, local passenger committees have raised valid logistical questions, pointing out the 7-meter width of the main station entrance and its adequacy for future traffic demands. On a broader national scale, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs approved four additional multi-tracking projects across West Bengal, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh in August 2026. Valued at approximately
9,450 crore rupees and scheduled for completion by
2030-31, these nationwide additions are projected to add
76 million tons of annual freight capacity and reduce oil imports by
130 million liters.
