A serious train accident occurred late Friday evening in Tiruvallur district, Tamil Nadu, when the Mysore-Darbhanga Bagmati Super Fast Express (Train No. 12578) collided with a stationary goods train at approximately 8:50 PM. Reports indicate that around 12 to 13 coaches derailed as a result of the collision, with two of them catching fire.

Fortunately, there have been no confirmed fatalities, though 19 individuals were injured and admitted to local hospitals for treatment. Rescue operations are currently ongoing at the accident site, with teams deployed to extinguish the fire and assist the injured passengers.

In response to the incident, food and water have been provided to the stranded passengers of the affected train. A special train was dispatched from Dr. MGR Chennai Central at 4:45 AM on October 12, 2024, to facilitate travel for those affected.

Tamil Nadu’s Deputy Chief Minister, Udhayanidhi Stalin, visited the injured passengers receiving treatment at the Government Stanley Medical College Hospital in Chennai. District Collector Dr. T. Prabhushankar confirmed that arrangements have been made for cooked meals and accommodation for those in need, as well as transport for individuals wishing to travel to Chennai.

Investigation and Causes

According to preliminary investigations, the accident may have been caused by a signal malfunction, leading to the express train striking the goods train from behind while traveling at a speed of 75 kilometers per hour. Firefighting vehicles and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel have been deployed to the scene.

The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, MK Stalin, expressed his shock over the incident and has ordered a swift response to ensure the wellbeing of the passengers and the efficient management of the rescue efforts. As investigations continue, railway traffic in the affected area has been disrupted.
