Train services disrupted near New Farakka station due to railway track subsidence
Railway operations on the key route of the Eastern and Northeast Frontier Railway have faced significant disruptions after a portion of the land near the tracks subsided at New Farakka station. Prioritizing passenger safety, the railway administration has cancelled several major trains, including Vande Bharat and Shatabdi Express, while many others have been diverted. Technical teams are currently working on a war footing to restore the track.
- Major trains cancelled: Howrah-New Jalpaiguri Vande Bharat Express, Shatabdi Express, Darjeeling Mail, Padatik Express, Kanchan Kanya Express, Kanchenjunga Express, Saraighat Express, Teesta-Torsha Express, and Uttar Banga Express.
- Diversions: Radhikapur-Howrah Express, Balurghat-Kolkata Express, and Balurghat-Bathinda Express are being operated via alternate routes.
- Safety Advisory: Passengers are urged to check their train status via Helpline 139 or the official IRCTC portal before heading to the station.
Restoration Efforts and Monitoring
Anup Kumar Singh, Senior DCM and PRO of the Katihar Railway Division, confirmed that the administration is on high alert. The track restoration work is being carried out with top priority. He further noted that the railway is closely monitoring the situation regarding water discharge from Nepal, which has caused concerns in the region. Continuous monitoring of water levels in sensitive areas is being conducted to ensure that train operations and passenger safety remain uncompromised.
Clarification on Station Maintenance
Addressing concerns regarding cleanliness at the Katihar pit line, the Senior DCM clarified that the sanitation work is continuing without any interruptions. Although there is a dispute regarding the removal of some personnel by a private contractor, the administration is in talks to resolve the matter, ensuring that onboard and station cleanliness standards are not impacted. Passengers are advised to keep a close watch on official announcements as the situation evolves and restoration work progresses.
