Train operations on the busy Howrah-Mumbai main line were recently disrupted when a wild elephant strayed onto the tracks. Passengers travelling along this vital route experienced delays as railway authorities acted swiftly to prioritize safety. Train operations on the Howrah-Mumbai main line were disrupted for 45 minutes on the night of September 3, 2026, after a tusker wandered onto the railway tracks at Bandamunda in the Chakradharpur Railway Division. Railway authorities immediately halted all train movements upon detecting the elephant to ensure the safety of the animal and passengers. Personnel from the Forest Department, with the assistance of railway staff, successfully drove the elephant away from the tracks and toward the Lohanda forest area. Following the latest incident, trains were operated with speed restrictions in the area until the morning of September 4.
This incident is part of a recurring pattern of wildlife movement in the Bandamunda region, which frequently causes disruptions and safety concerns.
A similar event occurred on August 27, 2026, at the Bandamunda railway yard in Rourkela, where a wild elephant forced a 30-minute halt on the Ranchi and Howrah-Mumbai lines before being guided toward the North Chirubeda forest. Rourkela Forest Division Assistant Conservator of Forests Gajendra Pal Singh Mathur stated that the department is actively coordinating to protect both wildlife and local residents.

193-crore rupee initiative to install track fencing and animal underpasses in sensitive forest corridors. Furthermore, the division has deployed an
Artificial Intelligence-based Intrusion Detection System at a cost of 15 crore rupees. This system is designed to detect vibrations caused by elephants and issue alerts, boasting an
efficiency rate of 99.5% in preventing train-elephant collisions. These proactive measures aim to ensure smoother journeys for passengers while safeguarding the precious wildlife of the region.
