Uttar Pradesh to modernize 84 small railway stations with 178 crore investment
In a significant move to enhance rail infrastructure, the Ministry of Railways has announced a major modernization program for 84 small railway stations across Uttar Pradesh. Managed by the Northern, North Eastern, and North Central Railway zones, this project involves an investment of Rs 178 crore. The primary objective of this initiative is to improve passenger amenities, reduce the passenger load on major transit hubs, and streamline traffic management across the state.
Key highlights of the modernization project include:
* 84 small stations to receive comprehensive upgrades under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme.
* Installation of escalators, lifts, modern seating, and Wi-Fi connectivity.
* Introduction of automatic ticket and water vending machines for passenger convenience.
* Focus on enhanced security systems, eco-air fans, and improved platform shelters.
* Specific overhaul of Manaknagar Railway Station with a Rs 16.52 crore budget, targeting completion by April 2027.
Focus on Lucknow and Infrastructure Upgrades
This initiative covers several key stations surrounding Lucknow, including Malhaur, Utrahtia, Manaknagar, Alamnagar, Transportnagar, Daliganj, Mohibullapur, and Badshahnagar. Among these, the Manaknagar Railway Station is set for a major transformation, which will include three new lifts, an 81-square-meter modern waiting room, dedicated washroom blocks, an expanded platform shed, and 2,500 square meters of modern parking space.
This project is part of the larger Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, which aims to redevelop 1,324 stations nationwide, with 157 stations located within Uttar Pradesh across five different railway zones.
Ongoing Redevelopment at Major Hubs
Beyond small stations, major hubs are also undergoing rapid changes. The iconic Lucknow Charbagh Railway Station is currently being redeveloped to include a massive air concourse, additional platforms, and wider foot overbridges. While the air concourse roof structure is expected to be finished by October 2026, officials noted that exact timelines remain fluid due to the complexity of maintaining train operations during construction.
Furthermore, Aishbagh Junction has already been successfully modernized at a cost of Rs 24.13 crore, providing commuters with a new station building and improved parking. Passengers should also take note that Lucknow Junction (Charbagh) will experience temporary platform changes between June and September 2026 to accommodate redevelopment works managed by the Railway Land Development Authority (RLDA).
