UP's Mega Rail Plan: Fast AC Local Trains & Namo Bharat Coming to Lucknow, Kanpur & Varanasi!
Uttar Pradesh is set to transform its daily commute by implementing a robust network of fast, air-conditioned local trains. Drawing inspiration from the successful suburban rail models seen in Mumbai and Kolkata, this initiative is designed to provide much-needed relief for travelers across the state.
Tackling Traffic and Overcrowding
The project aims to address two critical issues: the increasing traffic congestion on state roads and the intense overcrowding in express trains used by daily commuters. By deploying Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (MEMU) services and specialized local trains, the state plans to create a more efficient transit ecosystem.
Key Focus Areas and Cities
The rail corridor network will prioritize high-traffic routes, specifically targeting major urban centers. The primary focus areas include:
- Lucknow
- Kanpur
- Varanasi
- Meerut
- Ghaziabad
- Aligarh
Operational Progress
The Northeastern Railway has already begun preliminary work to operationalize these services. To ensure the most effective deployment, the Railway Board has requested detailed reports on the most congested routes within the Varanasi and Lucknow divisions, with official approval expected in the near future.
The Namo Bharat Rapid Transit System
Beyond the local train network, a dedicated regional rapid transit system called the 'Namo Bharat' corridor is currently under study and survey. This corridor is being developed to significantly reduce travel time between the following districts:
- Lucknow
- Kanpur
- Unnao
Planners have also noted the potential for the 'Namo Bharat' project to expand its reach to Ayodhya, representing a massive push toward enhanced regional rail connectivity.
