The Urga-Kusmunda rail line has become a vital artery for energy logistics, now facilitating the daily dispatch of two to three coal rakes. This operational connectivity is playing a crucial role in streamlining the movement of resources across the region.

This rail infrastructure serves as a critical component in the logistics network for South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL). It is specifically designed to support the efficient evacuation of coal from some of the most significant mining operations in the area, including:

- Dipka
- Kusmunda
The development of this line is a key part of the larger East West Railway Limited (CEWRL) project, which aims to establish a link between Gevra Road and Pendra Road. During inspections conducted in May 2023, former Coal Secretary Amrit Lal Meena pointed out the strategic importance of this connectivity, noting that specific elements like bridge number three are essential for optimizing coal transportation.
Massive Rail Expansion in Chhattisgarh
The activation of the Urga-Kusmunda line aligns with broader central government objectives to enhance railway capacity throughout Chhattisgarh. The momentum for expansion is accelerating; as of September 2026, the Union Cabinet has approved seven major projects to strengthen the network. A notable inclusion among these is the development of a fourth line between Bilaspur and Pendra Road.
