Vadodara Traffic Relief: ₹166.5 Crore 4-Lane ROB Approved for Alkapuri!
Indian Railways has officially greenlit a massive infrastructure upgrade for the Vadodara Division of Western Railway. A new four-lane Road Over Bridge (ROB) at Alkapuri has been approved with a total project budget of ₹166.5 crore, promising to transform the way commuters navigate this busy part of the city.
Ending the Alkapuri Bottleneck
For a long time, the existing Road Under Bridge (RUB) near the Vadodara Railway Station has been a source of frustration for motorists and pedestrians alike. Serving as a vital east-west link between the Alkapuri and Kalaghoda areas, the current structure is no longer capable of handling modern traffic demands. Several critical issues have made the existing RUB inadequate:
- Severe Height Restrictions: With a vertical clearance of only about 3.0 metres, larger vehicles are frequently unable to pass through.
- Monsoon Vulnerability: The area suffers from recurring waterlogging during the rainy season, paralyzing movement.
- Extreme Congestion: Traffic assessments show peak-hour volumes exceeding 1,600 PCU per hour, leading to constant delays.
- Safety Concerns: The current setup lacks adequate facilities for pedestrians and contains multiple traffic conflict points.
A Massive Shared Investment
This project is a collaborative effort between the central and state authorities. To ensure the successful construction of this four-lane grade-separated facility, the costs will be split equally between the two parties. Indian Railways will contribute approximately ₹83.2769 crore, while the State Government will match this with an equal share of roughly ₹83.2769 crore.
Connecting the Future of Vadodara
The new ROB is not just about fixing a broken link; it is about building a gateway to the city's most important transport hubs. Once completed, the bridge will provide seamless, uninterrupted connectivity to:
- Vadodara Railway Station
- GSRTC Bus Station
- The upcoming High-Speed Rail (Bullet Train) Station
By implementing a grade-separated road facility, the project will augment road capacity and functionality without disturbing essential railway operations. This strategic move will strengthen the entire transport network around Vadodara, providing a much-needed solution to the functional limitations that have plagued the Alkapuri area for years.
