Luxury on Tracks: New 24-Coach Vande Bharat Sleeper Trains!

Indian Railways is set to revolutionize long-distance overnight travel with the upcoming launch of a massive 24-coach variant of the Vande Bharat Sleeper train. This expanded version of the high-speed fleet is designed to provide a premium, high-end experience for passengers traveling across the country.

The Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai has been tasked with manufacturing 50 of these specialized trainsets. While the initial 16-coach Vande Bharat Sleeper prototypes—including those operating on the Mumbai CSMT–KSR Bengaluru and Howrah–Kamakhya routes—have already entered service, these new larger units represent a major scale-up in the national modernization project.

The new 24-coach Vande Bharat Sleeper trainsets are currently targeting a full operational rollout by June 2027.

Premium Amenities for Overnight Travel

The 24-coach design focuses heavily on passenger comfort and luxury, introducing several high-end upgrades compared to previous models. Travelers can look forward to a much more sophisticated onboard environment:

  • First AC Luxury: Premium coaches will be equipped with hot water shower facilities to enhance the overnight experience.
  • Dedicated Dining: A specialized pantry car will be integrated into the train to manage onboard meal heating and professional service.
  • Family-Friendly Facilities: Toilets will include integrated baby-care stations, making travel easier for families with infants.
  • Enhanced Berth Comfort: Each berth will feature improved cushioning, individualized reading lights, and modern charging points for all electronic devices.

Cutting-Edge Safety and Technology

Beyond comfort, Indian Railways is prioritizing safety and efficiency through the integration of advanced technological systems. The new rolling stock will feature:

  • KAVACH Anti-Collision System: The trains will be equipped with the indigenous KAVACH safety system to ensure maximum protection against accidents.
  • Aviation-Style Sanitation: Toilets will utilize bio-vacuum technology, similar to the systems found on aircraft, for superior hygiene.
  • Climate and Air Quality: The use of automatic doors and sealed gangways will help maintain better temperature control and improved interior air quality.
  • Energy Efficiency: The inclusion of regenerative braking capabilities will allow the trains to be more energy-efficient during operation.

Scaling Up the Modernization Drive

The introduction of these 24-coach units is part of a much larger vision to modernize the Indian rail network. Beyond the 50 units being produced by ICF Chennai, Indian Railways is coordinating with other major manufacturers, including Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) in Bengaluru and various industrial consortia.

This collaborative effort is part of a broader strategy to introduce over 200 Vande Bharat sleeper trains in multiple phases, ensuring a new era of speed, safety, and luxury for rail passengers across the nation.
