Vande Bharat Hits 100 km/h on Chenab Bridge

The Vande Bharat Express has achieved a monumental milestone in Indian engineering. On October 2, 2026, the high-speed train successfully crossed the world’s highest railway arch bridge over the Chenab River, maintaining a record-breaking speed of 100 kilometers per hour.

This historic achievement marks a significant leap for the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project. Along with the iconic Chenab Bridge, the train also traversed India’s first cable-stayed railway bridge over the Anji River at the same high velocity.

A Major Speed Upgrade for USBRL

The record-setting run follows a strategic decision to increase the maximum permissible speed on the 111-kilometer-long Katra-Banihal broad-gauge rail section. Prior to this upgrade, speed limits were restricted and varied across the route:

  • Previous Limits: 75 km/h generally, with 85 km/h allowed between Katra and Sangaldan.
  • New Uniform Limit: 100 km/h across the entire section, effective from 00:00 hours on October 2, 2026.

This operational enhancement was officially approved by the Ministry of Railways in August 2026. The decision was made only after the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) conducted rigorous inspections to ensure the highest standards of passenger safety.

Ensuring Safety and Stability

Before the speed increase was implemented, authorities conducted exhaustive evaluations of the critical infrastructure. The approval was contingent upon successful testing of several key components, including:

  • Track Stability: Ensuring the rails could handle higher kinetic energy.
  • Signaling Systems: Verifying that communication and braking signals remain precise at higher speeds.
  • Infrastructure Integrity: Confirming the structural strength of the massive arch and cable-stayed bridges.

"India's Engineering Pride"

Union Minister of Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw celebrated the achievement via social media, sharing a video of the Vande Bharat Express gliding across the massive structure. He described the event as a historic moment for the nation.

"100 km/h on India’s engineering pride."

The upgrade is expected to transform connectivity in the region. According to Uchit Singhal, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager of the Northern Railway, the increased speed limit will optimize train operations across the USBRL corridor. This will not only reduce travel times but also provide a faster, safer, and much more comfortable journey for passengers traveling through the scenic Himalayan terrain.
