India is gearing up for a major transformation in parcel transport as the country first Vande Bharat Freight EMU train successfully touched a high speed of 130 kilometers per hour during recent trials on the crucial Ahmedabad-Mumbai Central route. The rigorous trials were successfully carried out by the Research Designs and Standards Organisation to evaluate the operational readiness of the freight EMU. Operating with a 50 percent payload and maintaining an axle load of 20.32 tonnes, the 16-coach rake departed from Ahmedabad at approximately 9:00 AM on September 12, successfully completing its return journey from Mumbai Central on September 13. Previous empty-condition trials on the West Central Railway Chaumahla-Shamgarh-Gurla section saw the train hit an impressive 145 kmph, alongside demonstrating 130 kmph capabilities on the Kota-Rohal Khurd section.
Advanced Cargo and Safety Features
Engineered specifically to transport time-sensitive cargo, the train is fully equipped to handle electronics, e-commerce shipments, pharmaceuticals, courier packages, and delicate cold-chain products. Technically, the freight EMU features advanced braking and propulsion systems, automatic wide sliding doors, a specialized roller floor for efficient parcel loading, fire detection systems, CCTV surveillance, and reefer facilities for temperature-controlled transport.

According to the Ahmedabad Railway Division, the train is designed for an average operating speed of 80-90 kmph, providing a massive upgrade over the 60-70 kmph speeds typical of conventional cargo trains in the country.
