Indian Railways is actively considering the removal of 180-degree rotating seats from the Executive Class coaches of Vande Bharat Express trains to enhance sturdiness and operational efficiency. This significant proposal emerged during a high-level conference of Principal Chief Mechanical Engineers from various zones, with the minutes officially compiled and shared on September 2, 2026. The Integral Coach Factory in Chennai has been tasked by the Railway Board to initiate further action regarding this design change. Key highlights of this proposal include replacing the current rotating mechanism with fixed seating, tackling frequent mechanical wear and intensive maintenance, and potentially adding an extra row of seats per coach to boost railway revenue.
Officials explained that the current 180-degree rotating seat design relies on a complex mechanical configuration that includes multiple extra components and spatial clearances. Railway engineers have noted that this intricate setup is frequently prone to looseness, wear and tear, and unexpected mechanical failures. These issues directly translate into intensive and recurring maintenance requirements for the Vande Bharat fleet. Transitioning to a fixed seating arrangement will allow the national transporter to create a much more rigid, robust, and durable structure inside the premium carriages.
Beyond addressing durability and maintenance concerns, railway experts indicated that eliminating the rotating mechanism could significantly optimize available space within Executive Class coaches. A streamlined fixed seating arrangement would comfortably accommodate the addition of an
extra row of seats per coach. Officials believe this spatial optimization will contribute substantially to increasing overall railway revenue. Although the proposal is currently in the early stages of evaluation, it highlights a strategic shift toward simplifying coach design to ensure smoother operations and increased passenger capacity across premier routes.
