Railway board has approved the construction of a railway station near Kochi airport, a long-awaited project for many travelers.
The railway board has given the green light for a new railway station close to Kochi airport. This announcement was made on Wednesday by George Kurian, the Union minister for fisheries, animal husbandry, and dairying.
The new station is called Cochin Airport railway station, and it has been a dream for many people who travel to and from the airport. The minister mentioned that he had discussions with the railway minister earlier this month, and they assured that the necessary processes would be quickened.
This station will be built behind the airport, in the area between Chowara and Angamaly railway stations. Construction is expected to start soon and should be completed within two years. Once ready, various trains, including Vande Bharat, will stop at this new station.
The project will cost around Rs 12 crore, and plans for two platforms and other details are already underway. Currently, passengers traveling to the airport have to rely on Angamaly or Aluva railway stations or hire taxis to reach their destination.
The railway station was first proposed back in 2010 but did not progress. With over 1.12 crore passengers using the airport in the past year, this new station is a welcome addition. Once built, electric buses may operate between the station and the airport to improve connectivity.
