The Central Government has approved the construction of two additional railway lines on the Delhi-Ambala section to improve train operations in Northern India. This project covers a 194 km stretch and is vital for connecting Delhi with Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu & Kashmir. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, sanctioned the project on February 13, 2026. This expansion will significantly reduce travel time for passengers heading towards Srinagar and Mata Vaishno Devi.

Project Details and Construction Timeline

The total cost of the Delhi-Ambala expansion is estimated at 5,983 crore and is scheduled for completion by 2030. A total of 415 km of new track will be laid to facilitate the third and fourth lines. The infrastructure plan includes one important bridge, 28 major bridges, and 178 minor bridges. To ensure smooth road traffic, 2 road overbridges and 79 underbridges will also be constructed. Railway officials stated that no major land acquisition is required as the work will stay within existing railway territory.

Expected Benefits for Passengers and National Security

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted that these new lines will separate passenger and freight traffic, which is currently causing delays. This separation will allow premium trains like Vande Bharat, Shatabdi, and Rajdhani to run more efficiently. Beyond passenger comfort, the project holds strategic importance for the rapid movement of defense equipment and troops to the Jammu and Kashmir border regions. The project is part of the PM Gati-Shakti National Master Plan for multi-modal connectivity.

Feature Details
Total Distance 194 km
New Track Length 415 km
Freight Capacity Addition 24.6 million tonnes annually
Employment Generation 132 lakh human-days
CO2 Emission Reduction 43 crore kg annually
Logistics Cost Savings 952 crore per year
