The critical mission saw the organ travel from Surat to Ahmedabad aboard the 20901 Mumbai Central-Gandhinagar Capital Vande Bharat Express, proving that the railway network remains a reliable lifeline even when conventional air transport is hampered by weather conditions.

Overcoming Weather Challenges
Heavy rainfall across Southern Gujarat had significantly disrupted air connectivity, leaving medical teams searching for the fastest and most secure transport method. Indian Railways emerged as the most dependable partner, ensuring the heart reached its destination well within the required window for a successful transplant. The operation was made possible through the seamless synergy between the Indian Railways, the Railway Protection Force (RPF), Gujarat State Police, and specialized medical teams from the New Civil Hospital in Surat and the U.N. Mehta Institute.
A Coordinated Green Corridor
Upon the train’s arrival at Ahmedabad Railway Station, a dedicated ‘green corridor’ was established by the RPF and Gujarat State Police starting from Platform No. 1. This ensured the medical team could transport the organ to the hospital without any traffic delays. Ahmedabad Division’s Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Ved Prakash praised the team, calling it a “moment of immense pride and satisfaction” for the entire railway network.
This life-saving initiative was made possible by the selfless decision of the family of a young donor named Mithun from Odisha. His donation has provided a new lease on life for four patients. This event marks the 96th successful organ donation facilitated by the New Civil Hospital in Surat, while the U.N. Mehta Institute has now crossed the milestone of 77 successful heart transplants. Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel lauded the coordination, describing the mission as a “unique example of service” in the history of Indian public transport.
