This article discusses the recent snowfall in Kashmir and its impact on rail and air travel, along with weather forecasts for the upcoming days.
Right now, there’s a lot of snowfall happening in the hilly areas from Uttarakhand to Kashmir. The mountains are covered with a beautiful white blanket of snow. A video of the Vande Bharat Express train travelling through this snowy landscape has gone viral, shared by the Rail Minister on social media.
Meanwhile, the Banihal-Baramulla train service was temporarily stopped for safety reasons. However, no trains have been cancelled, and the Vande Bharat train from Katra to Srinagar continues to operate despite the snow. The heavy snowfall and strong winds have caused power supply issues in several areas, with fallen trees damaging some houses.
At the Srinagar international airport, flights were delayed due to low visibility and snow on the runway. Similarly, heavy snowfall near the Navi Yuga tunnel on the Jammu-Srinagar highway has led to a traffic halt. Vehicles stuck on the road are being moved to safer spots, and several routes like Srinagar-Sonamarg-Gumri and the Sinthan road are also closed.
The weather department has predicted rain and more snowfall on January 26 and 27. Since Thursday evening, the weather has been changing due to a western disturbance, and many people woke up to a snowy sight on Friday morning.
In places like Gulmarg, Yusmarg, and Sonamarg, the snowfall has been between three to five feet, which tourists are enjoying. In Shopyan, five feet of snow has piled up, and it’s the first snowfall in Karanah and Tithwal areas since 2005. Rainfall has caused waterlogging in some parts of Jammu, Kathua, Samba, Akhnoor, Ramban, Reasi, and Udhampur since Thursday night.
Summary:
- Heavy snowfall is ongoing in the hilly regions of India.
- The Vande Bharat train from Katra to Srinagar is still running.
- Flight operations at Srinagar airport are suspended due to snow.
- Several roads are closed and traffic is halted in some areas.
- More snowfall and rain are expected in the coming days.
