₹839 Cr Deal: Wabtec to Power Vande Bharat Sleeper Trains
Indian Railways awards a ₹839 crore contract to Wabtec for Vande Bharat Sleeper systems, including braking and doors, to enhance passenger safety.

Indian Railways has taken a massive leap toward modernizing overnight travel by awarding a contract worth approximately ₹839 crore (US$94 million) to the American firm Wabtec Corporation. This significant deal is specifically for the Vande Bharat Sleeper train program, focusing on critical onboard systems that will define the passenger experience.
The agreement, officially announced on October 27, 2026, covers the procurement of essential components, including braking systems, doors, and gangway solutions. Beyond just supplying parts, Wabtec will provide integration support, testing, commissioning, and long-term operational reliability support to ensure these high-tech trainsets meet rigorous safety standards.
Manufacturing Scale and ICF's Role
The Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai has been tasked with the massive undertaking of manufacturing 50 Vande Bharat Sleeper trainsets. Each of these trainsets will consist of 24 coaches, designed to provide a premium and comfortable overnight journey for passengers across the country.
Wabtec’s involvement is expected to significantly enhance service availability and passenger safety while simultaneously reducing the complexity of long-term maintenance. Pascal Schweitzer, President of Wabtec Transit, emphasized that this order highlights the company's deep commitment to the ongoing modernization of India's railway network.
Global Market Growth and Project Timeline
The scale of this partnership is reflected in the business impact for Wabtec. Ajay Mani, Managing Director of Faiveley Transport Rail Technologies (a Wabtec subsidiary), noted that India currently accounts for nearly 10% of the firm's global transit revenue. This figure is projected to climb to between 13% and 14% by the year 2030.
The project is moving at a rapid pace with the following milestones set:
- November 10, 2026: ICF aims to finalize the design for the 24-coach trainsets.
- May or June 2027: The first prototype is expected to be ready for inspection and testing.
The Road to Modern Overnight Travel
This contract is part of a much larger ecosystem of development for the Vande Bharat Sleeper fleet. Previous propulsion contracts for these 50 trainsets were already secured in December 2024, with Medha being awarded 33 rakes and Alstom receiving 17 rakes. Furthermore, the public sector undertaking BEML is currently developing an additional 10 Vande Bharat Sleeper trainsets.
The rollout of these services follows the successful launch of the first sleeper service on the Howrah-Kamakhya route in January 2026. Looking ahead, Indian Railways has planned further expansions of these premium overnight services on high-demand corridors, including:
- Varanasi to Delhi
- Mumbai to Bengaluru
