Indian Railways Deploys Yatri Suvidha Kendras to Manage Crowds
Indian Railways introduces Yatri Suvidha Kendras at major stations to manage crowds and prevent stampedes through advanced entry control and amenities.

Indian Railways has launched a major initiative to tackle passenger congestion at its busiest stations. Through the implementation of dedicated Yatri Suvidha Kendras (passenger holding areas), the railway aims to streamline movement and enhance safety during peak festive seasons.
A Response to Safety Concerns
This strategic move follows a high-level meeting chaired by Rail Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. The decision to establish permanent waiting areas at 60 major stations was accelerated after a tragic stampede at New Delhi Railway Station on February 15, 2025, which resulted in 18 fatalities. To prevent such incidents, the railway is prioritizing crowd control and passenger security through these specialized centers.
New Entry Protocols and Passenger Control
Under the newly implemented protocols, stations will utilize advanced entry control systems to manage the flow of people. The system is designed to ensure that:
- Confirmed Passengers: Gain direct access to the platforms for boarding.
- Waitlisted or Unticketed Passengers: Are directed to specialized Yatri Suvidha Kendras to prevent platform overcrowding.
Modern Amenities at Holding Centers
These specialized centers are equipped with modern facilities to ensure passenger comfort, including:
- CCTV surveillance featuring facial recognition technology.
- Dedicated ticket counters and seating areas.
- RO drinking water facilities and baby care rooms.
For instance, the Anand Vihar Terminal center is equipped with 14 ticket counters and 16 CCTV cameras. Meanwhile, the Ayodhya Dham facility features a unique 'My I Help You' booth and dedicated spaces for passengers with disabilities.
Pilot Projects and Nationwide Expansion
Currently, pilot projects are operational at several key locations, including New Delhi, Anand Vihar, Varanasi, Ayodhya, and Patna. The railway is also working on expanding these facilities to several other major stations, such as:
- Ujjain and Bhopal
- Nashik Road and Sabarmati
- Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra and Sehore
- Bandra Terminus
Advanced Management and Future Readiness
Beyond physical infrastructure, Indian Railways is deploying several technological and administrative measures to maintain order:
- Station Directors: New officials with the authority to regulate ticket sales relative to train capacity.
- Real-time Coordination: The establishment of on-site 'War Rooms' to manage emergencies instantly.
- Enhanced Comfort: Installation of high-capacity HVLS fans to manage station temperatures.
- Digital Integration: Following the 8th All India Conference of GRP heads, Government Railway Police (GRP) personnel have been integrated into the RailMadad platform for faster complaint resolution.
Looking ahead, the railway is already preparing for the Kumbh-2027 in Haridwar. Special infrastructure, including new foot-over bridges and crowd control measures at platforms and ghats, is being designed to accommodate the massive influx of pilgrims, incorporating local cultural motifs into the station design.
