Indian Railways is speeding up the deployment of the Kavach Automatic Train Protection system to make rail travel safer. The government is investing around ₹50,000 crore into this indigenous technology to prevent train collisions and signal jumping. This mission is being implemented in a fast-track mode to cover thousands of kilometers of tracks across the country.

Which areas are getting Kavach installation and what is the progress

The Ministry of Railways recently approved several key projects for Kavach deployment. In the East Coast Railway, ₹270 crore was approved for 631 route kilometers covering sections like Khurda Road-Balangir and HariDaspur-Paradip. Additionally, the Ahmedabad Division in Gujarat will be fully covered under the Kavach 4.0 system with a ₹140 crore investment for 598 route kilometers. As of March 2026, 3,103 route kilometers are already covered, and work is ongoing for another 24,427 kilometers.

Which companies are benefiting from the Kavach project

Several Indian companies have secured massive orders to implement this technology. These companies provide the hardware and software needed for the onboard and station-based units. The project follows the Make in India initiative, with about 90% of components being manufactured domestically.

Company Name Order Book / Recent Orders
HBL Engineering ₹5,748 crore total order book
Kernex Microsystems ₹4,150 crore total order book
Concord Control Systems ₹697 crore total order book
Quadrant Future Tek Ltd Involved in implementation

How does the Kavach system work to prevent accidents

Kavach is a safety system that monitors train movements constantly. It uses RFID tags, GPS, and GSM networks to communicate between the locomotive and the station. If a driver misses a signal or exceeds the speed limit, the system automatically applies the brakes to stop the train. This technology is especially useful during heavy fog or poor weather conditions to ensure trains do not collide.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is Kavach 4.0 and who approved it?

Kavach 4.0 is the latest version of the Automatic Train Protection system. It was approved by the Research Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO) on July 16, 2024.

How much of the Kavach system is made in India?

Kavach is a ‘Make in India’ technology where approximately 90% of the components are manufactured domestically within India.
