Indian Railways is taking a proactive step to resolve the recurring issue of air conditioning failures in LHB coaches. The Dhanbad Rail Division has launched a technical upgrade initiative designed to eliminate sudden AC shutdowns and improve the overall cooling experience for travellers. By modernizing the switchboard cabinet infrastructure, the railway aims to provide a more reliable and comfortable journey for passengers across its fleet.
Key highlights of the LHB AC system upgrade include:

Technical Improvements for Uninterrupted Travel
Currently, many passengers face significant discomfort during the summer months when AC systems trip unexpectedly. The core of this upgrade involves replacing standard MCBs and installing a more advanced indication system on the coach switchboard cabinets. With the new MCB setup, maintenance staff can perform an immediate reset of a tripped circuit, ensuring that cooling is restored without the long delays that passengers often endure.
Furthermore, the new indication system provides a transparent view of the battery charger’s operational status. Previously, staff had to manually open panels to identify faults, which was time-consuming and often required powering off the system. Now, the automated status display allows for rapid fault identification, keeping the cooling system running smoothly while the train is in motion.
Enhanced Safety and Operational Efficiency
Beyond passenger comfort, this initiative is a major win for railway safety. Officials from the Electrical Department noted that the frequent tripping of MCBs due to overloads has been a long-standing concern. By upgrading these components, the railways are effectively minimizing the risk of fire and short circuits, which are often caused by faulty electrical connections.
This project, which covers both End On Generation (EOG) and Head On Generation (HOG) LHB coaches, represents a strategic investment of 15.21 lakh. By streamlining maintenance procedures, the Dhanbad Rail Division is setting a new standard for operational efficiency, ensuring that the technical staff can resolve issues quickly without disrupting the travel experience for passengers.
