The Railway Board is increasing its focus on operational safety to reduce accidents. The Chairman of the Railway Board (CRB) will now directly monitor failures related to tracks, signaling systems, and engine or coach malfunctions. This move aims to ensure that technical glitches are identified and fixed before they lead to major incidents.
What are the key areas of monitoring?
The monitoring process will focus on three main technical areas to ensure smooth train operations. These include the condition of the tracks to prevent derailments, the reliability of signaling systems to avoid collisions, and the maintenance of engines and coaches to stop mid-journey breakdowns. The goal is to create a more accountable system for safety checks.
What are the recent safety measures taken by Indian Railways?
The Railway Board has already implemented several steps to improve safety across different zones:
- Data Logger Monitoring: All 17 railway zones were directed to monitor data logger reports daily to prevent collisions.
- Signal Safety Drives: Special drives were launched to fix loose signaling and telecommunication components.
- Tunnel Communication: A new VHF band communication system was installed in a 331-meter tunnel in the Bilaspur division to ensure zero-gap connectivity.
- Manpower Focus: The board highlighted the need for more staff to manage increasing infrastructure and ensure safe train operations.
