Indian Railways has introduced a new rule to make travel easier for passengers with disabilities. Now, people holding a valid Unique Disability ID (UDID) card can travel in designated unreserved coaches for Divyangjan in Mail and Express trains. This decision follows a Railway Board letter sent to all Zonal Railways to improve accessibility.
Who can use the Divyangjan coaches?
Passengers with disabilities who carry a valid UDID card issued by the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities will be treated as bona fide passengers. This facility is also available for those who have valid identification for concessional fares under existing Railway rules. The rule applies specifically to the SLRD and LSLRD coaches which are the luggage-cum-brake vans with Divyangjan compartments.
What are the rules for UDID and EPICS cards?
- UDID cards are now accepted as valid ID for travel in special unreserved coaches.
- The E-Ticketing Photo Identity Card (EPICS) still allows passengers to get travel concessions.
- Applications for these cards can be done through the Indian Railways Divyangjan portal or the Central Government services portal.
What action will be taken against unauthorized travel?
The Ministry of Railways has clarified that these coaches are strictly for Divyangjan passengers. Any person found traveling in these reserved compartments without valid authorization will face strict action. Such penalties will be imposed according to the provisions of the Railway Act, 1989 to ensure the facility remains available for those who actually need it.
