Indian Railways and IRCTC have clear rules for passengers when a train is delayed. If a train is late by 3 hours or more from its scheduled departure, passengers can claim a full refund of their ticket fare. To get this benefit, the passenger must decide not to travel.

ℹ️: Indian Railways Update: Over 350 train trips cancelled and diverted, check reasons and routes।

How to claim a full refund for delayed trains

The process for claiming a refund depends on the type of ticket you hold. The most important condition is that the passenger should not travel on the train to be eligible for the money back.

  • Online Tickets: Passengers must file a Ticket Deposit Receipt (TDR) online before the actual departure of the train.
  • Counter Tickets: Passengers must cancel their ticket at the railway counter before the train departs.
  • Eligibility: This rule applies to all ticket types, including Confirmed, RAC, and Waiting tickets.

Important conditions and refund timeline

Getting a refund requires following the rules strictly. Any mistake in the process can lead to a zero refund. Once the request is processed, the money usually reaches the account within 3 to 7 days, though some cases may take up to 90 days.

Scenario Refund Status
Travelled on the train No Refund
TDR not filed or filed late No Refund
Wrong reason selected in TDR Zero Refund
Train delayed 3+ hours & no travel Full Refund

New cancellation rules effective from April 2026

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav announced new cancellation charges for passengers who cancel tickets of their own will. These rules are different from the delay-based refund policy.

  • Less than 8 hours before departure: No refund for confirmed tickets.
  • 8 to 24 hours before: 50% fare deduction.
  • 24 to 72 hours before: 25% fare deduction.
  • More than 72 hours before: Maximum refund after minimum charges.
