Indian Railways has set specific rules for passengers traveling during the night to ensure everyone has a peaceful journey. These rules mainly apply after 10 PM and are meant to prevent disturbances in the coaches. Passengers who ignore these guidelines may face penalties or fines from the railway staff.

What are the main restrictions after 10 PM

To maintain silence, passengers cannot talk loudly in groups or on mobile phones after 10 PM. Playing music or videos without earphones is also prohibited. Additionally, most coach lights are switched off, leaving only designated night lights on so that others can sleep. Some charging points may also be turned off after 11 PM for fire safety reasons.

Rules for Middle Berth and Ticket Checking

The use of the middle berth is strictly timed between 10 PM and 6 AM. During the day, from 6 AM to 10 PM, the middle berth must remain folded to allow lower berth passengers to sit. Regarding ticket verification, TTEs generally do not check tickets between 10 PM and 6 AM, though this does not apply to passengers boarding the train after 10 PM.

Penalties for violating railway rules

Violation Penalty/Action

Smoking or consuming alcohol Heavy fines and possible imprisonment
Carrying flammable materials Serious legal action and heavy fines

These rules are based on Section 145 of the Railway Act, 1989. The Railway Board implemented these measures after receiving many complaints from passengers about night-time disturbances.

According to Section 145 of the Railway Act, passengers creating noise or disturbing others can be fined between Rs 500 and Rs 1000.
