Holding a confirmed train ticket does not mean you can board from any station. Indian Railways has strict rules regarding the boarding point, and failing to follow them can lead to heavy fines or the loss of your seat. A recent case where a woman was fined 2560 rupees has brought these regulations back into the spotlight.
What happens if you miss your boarding station?
If a passenger does not board the train from the scheduled station and has not officially changed the boarding point, the TTE can mark the seat as a no show. According to the rules, if the passenger does not appear for the next two stations, the TTE has the authority to allot that seat to a waiting list passenger or someone else in need. In some cases, passengers may be charged a penalty that can be nearly double the original ticket fare.
New rules for changing boarding station from April 2026
To make travel easier, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav announced new provisions effective from April 2026. Passengers can now change their boarding station up to 30 minutes before the scheduled departure time. This facility is available for both confirmed and RAC tickets and can be done once via IRCTC online or at reservation counters. This update aims to reduce no show cases and give passengers more flexibility.
How will TTEs manage seats now?
Under the updated system, TTEs will use Handheld Terminals (HHT) to immediately mark a passenger as not turned up if they are missing from the original boarding station. The system will then release the seat in real-time. This vacant seat will be allotted to RAC or waiting list passengers, who will receive the update via a mobile message. The Center for Railway Information Systems (CRIS) is updating the software to implement these changes across all zones.
