Indian Railways Waste Management: New 4-bin system implemented at stations, check penalty rules
Indian Railways has introduced a new waste segregation system at railway stations to improve cleanliness. This move follows the Solid Waste Management Rules 2026 notified by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. The system officially started on April 1, 2026, as part of the Swachh Rail-Swachh Bharat campaign.

What are the 4 types of waste bins and their uses?
Passengers will now see four different colored bins at stations to separate garbage at the source. This helps in better recycling and scientific disposal of waste.

The rollout began at major stations including New Delhi, Prayagraj, Howrah, Chennai, Lucknow, Gorakhpur, Kanpur, and LTT Mumbai. The Railway Board has issued strict guidelines to ensure these rules are followed by both passengers and staff.
- Penalty: Littering on platforms or tracks will attract a fine between ₹500 and ₹2000.
- Monitoring: Digital tracking and regular cleaning will be used to maintain the system.
- Staff Rules: Pantry car and OBHS staff must use sealed bags for waste collection or face contract termination.
