The Union Cabinet has officially approved the extension of the Ahmedabad Metro rail network. This new project will extend the North-South corridor from GIFT City to Shahpur. The decision was taken in a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 24, 2026. This move is set to boost connectivity within the Gujarat capital region, making travel easier for office goers and students.

Project Cost and Timeline Details
The new elevated stretch will cover a distance of 3.33 kilometers. The government has allocated a total budget of ₹1,067.35 crore for this specific extension. According to the plan, the construction work is expected to finish in approximately 4 years. With this addition, the total metro network across Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar will expand beyond 71 kilometers, growing from the current 68.28 kilometers.
New Stations and Route Information
This extension, known as Phase 2B, will introduce three new elevated stations to the network. These stations are designed to serve high-traffic zones and educational institutions.
- GIFT City House: This station connects directly to the core financial zone, serving banks and office buildings.
- Gujarat Biotechnology University: Located to serve the university campus.
- Shahpur: Situated strategically near the route towards IIT Gandhinagar.
Connectivity Benefits for Commuters
The project aims to solve last-mile connectivity issues for people working in GIFT City. Commuters will have seamless interchange options at GNLU and Old High Court stations. The line also provides a direct link to the upcoming multi-modal transportation hub at Sabarmati. The Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC) projects that around 23,702 passengers will use this route daily by the year 2029.
