The government has shared important details about the condition of planes used by major airlines in India. Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol told the Lok Sabha that an analysis was done on 754 aircraft across six big airlines. The report shows that frequent technical faults were found in 377 of these planes since January of last year. This data highlights the need for constant maintenance in the aviation sector.
How many planes are affected in each airline?
The data shows that the Air India Group has faced recurring issues in a large part of its fleet. Out of 267 aircraft, 191 had frequent faults, which is roughly 75% of their total planes. Other airlines also reported similar issues during the checks.
- Air India: 137 out of 166 planes faced issues.
- Air India Express: 54 out of 101 planes had faults.
- IndiGo: 148 out of 405 planes reported recurring faults.
- SpiceJet: 16 out of 43 planes were affected.
- Akasa Air: 14 out of 32 planes had issues.
What is the government doing to fix this?
The minister assured that even though these numbers seem high, the total technical problems in flights have gone down over the last three years. There were 421 cases reported in 2024. To keep a better watch on safety, the number of technical officers in the DGCA has been increased. An Air India spokesperson also clarified that their numbers are high because they are doing very strict inspections to find and fix problems early.
