Residents of Bhagalpur are finally receiving positive updates regarding the long-standing traffic issues in the city. The state government has assured that construction work on the much-awaited Ganga Path will commence shortly. This development comes after local MLA Rohit Pandey raised the issue of severe congestion on the route from Zero Mile to Champanala during the assembly session on February 24-25, 2026. Minister-in-charge Dilip Kumar Jaiswal confirmed the government’s commitment to speeding up these projects to relieve the city from traffic jams.
What are the key details of the Ganga Path project?
The Ganga Path is designed to act like a ‘Marine Drive’ for Bhagalpur, offering a bypass that connects Munger to Mirzachowki without forcing heavy vehicles into the city. The project involves a massive investment under the Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM). Dilip Buildcon Limited has been awarded a major contract worth ₹3,400 crore for the Sultanganj-Bhagalpur-Sabour stretch, with a construction timeline of 42 months.
Project Overview:
- Segment 1: Sultanganj to Sabour via Bhagalpur (41.33 km) costing ₹4,849.83 crore.
- Segment 2: Munger to Sultanganj (42 km) costing ₹5,119.80 crore.
- Total Package: Approximately ₹9,970 crore for both stretches.
Update on Elevated Flyover and Railway Bridges
The government also addressed the demand for an elevated flyover to decongest the busy Zero Mile – Tilkamanjhi – Ghantaghar – Tatarpur – Champanala route. The minister stated that the process will move forward rapidly once the Detailed Project Report (DPR) is finalized. This flyover is seen as the primary solution for the daily gridlock faced by commuters in the heart of the city.
In addition to the road projects, proposals for new Road Over Bridges (ROBs) have been sent to Eastern Railway. These bridges are proposed for Gumti No. 12 and the Tatarpur railway crossing. Once approved by the railway authorities, these structures will significantly reduce waiting times at crossings that currently cause long backups.
Other infrastructure developments in Bhagalpur
Apart from the Ganga Path and flyover, several other projects are in the pipeline to improve connectivity. The construction of a new four-lane bridge parallel to the existing Vikramshila Setu is ongoing, with a revised completion target of March–April 2028. An administrative sanction of ₹50.17 crore has also been approved for expanding the NH-80 bypass from Zero Mile to Lohia Bridge.
