Bhagalpur Junction is preparing for a significant upgrade following a fresh budget allocation of ₹50 crore. The project operates under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme and aims to modernize the station’s technical and passenger infrastructure. According to officials, the actual construction work for the yard remodeling and platform extension is scheduled to begin in late March 2026, right after the Holi festival.
What Changes Will Passengers See on Platforms?
The railway administration has decided to extend platforms 2 and 3 to handle higher passenger traffic. These platforms currently hold 16 coaches but will be lengthened by approximately 7 meters to accommodate 24-coach trains. This extension helps in managing longer express trains efficiently.
Additionally, the curved railway lines 1 and 2 will be straightened to allow direct entry for trains coming from Howrah and Malda. To make space for this alignment, the park area near Platform 1 will be cleared. All stairs on the Foot Over Bridges will also be widened to ensure smoother movement for passengers.
New Signaling System and Project Costs
A new Root Relay Interlocking (RRI) system is being installed to replace the old manual coordination between the Eastern and Western cabins. This electronic system will centralize all signaling and shunting operations on a single panel, making train management safer and faster. The project also includes a new coaching yard near the PWI office to improve train maintenance.
