Passengers traveling through Bhagalpur are set to experience a better and faster journey very soon. The railways have decided to upgrade the local trains with modern 3-phase MEMU rakes, which will significantly increase seating capacity and speed. Along with these upgrades, there are important changes regarding ticket counters and train timings that will impact daily commuters starting from March 1.
What new facilities will passengers get in local trains?
The old local train rakes are being replaced with advanced 3-phase MEMU (Mainline Electric Multiple Unit) rakes. This change will increase the overall passenger capacity by 30%. The driving motor coach will now be able to carry 226 passengers, while the trailer coach will accommodate 325 passengers.
These new trains come with better technology that allows for faster acceleration and braking. This is expected to reduce travel time by at least 10%. Inside the coaches, passengers will find improved amenities like cushioned seats, wider windows, and mobile charging sockets. For safety, a ‘Push-to-Talk’ system is being installed, allowing riders to speak directly to the Train Manager (Guard) during emergencies.
New Train Timings and Station Entry Rules
To manage the heavy rush at Bhagalpur Junction, a new rule is now in place. Passengers are allowed to enter the platforms only 30 minutes before their train’s scheduled departure. Those arriving earlier will have to wait in a designated holding area. A new two-story holding area is also proposed to be built soon.
The Malda Division has also announced a change in timings for the Sahibganj–Bhagalpur passenger service effective from March 1:
| Train Route | New Departure | New Arrival |
|---|---|---|
| Rampur Hat to Sahibganj | 06:10 AM | 09:25 AM |
| Sahibganj to Bhagalpur | 09:30 AM | 11:25 AM |
Why is the TMBU Reservation Counter closing?
The railway reservation ticket counter located at Tilka Manjhi Bhagalpur University (TMBU) will be permanently closed from March 1. This counter had been operational for 13 years but was seeing very low demand, selling an average of only 10 to 20 tickets per day.
Officials also cited persistent issues with slow internet and network connectivity as reasons for the closure. Additionally, passengers should note that the reservation counter on the southern side of Bhagalpur station has reduced its operations. It now works only in a single shift from 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM.
