Bhagalpur Railway Junction is undergoing a massive transformation to improve passenger convenience and infrastructure. The railway authorities have started the installation of lifts on platforms 2 and 3, with a strict deadline to complete the work before the commencement of the Shravani Mela. This move is expected to provide significant relief to the large number of pilgrims and regular passengers who visit the station daily. Along with these upgrades, Eastern Railway has also approved the conversion of three halts into full-fledged stations to expand rail connectivity in the region.
Key Facilities and Lift Installation Timeline
The groundwork for the new lifts on platforms 2 and 3 began on April 20, 2026, with the excavation process. These platforms handle a high volume of passengers, making the addition of lifts a high priority for the Malda Division. Once these are installed, every platform at Bhagalpur Junction will be equipped with lift facilities. Plans are also in place to relocate the existing lift on platform 1 to a more convenient location as part of the overall station redevelopment strategy.
Upgradation of Halts and New Terminal Project
Under the Gati Shakti scheme, three halts on the Bhagalpur-Dumka and Godda sections are set to become proper railway stations. This project involves an investment of approximately 9 to 10 crore rupees. The upgraded stations will feature better seating, improved lighting, and 24-hour ticketing services. Additionally, a mega project for the New Bhagalpur Terminal at Jagdishpur is moving forward with an estimated budget of 310.45 crore rupees. This new terminal will serve as a secondary hub to decongest the main Bhagalpur Junction.
- Upgraded Stations: Gonudham, Panjwara Road, and Gangwara are the three halts being converted into stations.
- New Terminal Features: The Jagdishpur terminal will include three passenger platforms, two foot-over bridges, and multiple pit lines for maintenance.
- Platform Extension: Platforms 2, 3, 4, and 6 at the existing station will be lengthened to accommodate 24-coach trains.
- Investment: Over 480 crore rupees have been earmarked for the multi-story redevelopment of the current Bhagalpur station.
