If you are planning to travel from New Delhi Railway Station in the coming days, you must plan your journey carefully. The Paharganj Traffic Circle has issued a new advisory regarding traffic restrictions on Chelmsford Road. The Delhi Jal Board has started urgent repair work on a sewer line in front of the railway station. This excavation work began on February 26, 2026, and will continue until March 5, 2026.
Which areas are affected by the work?
The construction work is primarily focused on Chelmsford Road, right in front of the New Delhi Railway Station. Due to the presence of heavy machinery and digging activities, traffic flow will be impacted in the Munia Chowk area and the connecting roads leading towards Paharganj.
The authorities have stated that traffic will be partially restricted or diverted to manage the congestion. This is a necessary step to repair the damaged sewer line and relay a new one. The work is expected to last for about 8 days, and during this time, the usual smooth flow of vehicles might be disrupted, especially during peak hours.
What should passengers do to avoid delays?
The Delhi Traffic Police has specifically warned railway passengers to account for extra travel time. Since the roads near the station entrance might be clogged, there is a risk of missing trains if you cut it too close. It is highly recommended to leave your home earlier than usual to handle any unexpected jams.
To avoid the mess on Chelmsford Road entirely, officials have suggested using the Ajmeri Gate side of the station for entry and drop-offs. For general commuters, using alternate routes like Minto Road, DDU Marg, and BSZ Marg is advisable.
Police have also strictly banned parking on the diversion routes to prevent bottlenecks. Drivers are requested to follow the instructions of the traffic personnel deployed on the ground to keep things moving.
