New Railway Line from Raxaul to Kathmandu
A direct train service from New Delhi to Kathmandu is set to become a reality with the forthcoming construction of a new railway line from Raxaul in Bihar to Kathmandu in Nepal. The proposed 136 km railway track, estimated to cost around Rs 25 thousand crore, will feature 13 stations. Currently, Raxaul is connected to New Delhi via an existing railway network, and the new line will extend this connection directly to the capital of Nepal.
Final Land Survey and Project Development
The Konkan Railway Corporation Limited has initiated the final land survey (FLS) for the Raxaul-Kathmandu line, which is expected to be completed within a year. The survey will cost Rs 37 crore and will inform the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the railway line. Following the completion of the survey, the DPR will be prepared, and a tender process will commence for the construction of the tracks. This project, which began discussions in 2022, aims to boost connectivity and facilitate travel between the two capitals.
Travel Time and Economic Impact
Once operational, the new rail link from Raxaul to Kathmandu is projected to significantly reduce travel time, allowing passengers to cover the distance in just 2-3 hours, compared to the current 5-hour journey by road. This enhanced railway connectivity is expected to foster increased trade and business interactions between India and Nepal, leveraging the strategic position of Raxaul railway station near the border. The initiative represents a vital step towards strengthening economic ties and improving regional transport infrastructure.
