Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Mizoram Chief Minister Lal Duhoma have officially flagged off the new Sairang–Silchar passenger train service. The inauguration took place on February 9, 2026, marking a major step forward for rail connectivity between Mizoram and Assam. Along with the new train service, the ministers also opened several high-end facilities at the Guwahati railway station to make travel more comfortable for passengers.
What are the key features of the Sairang-Silchar train?
This new train service connects Sairang, which serves as the railhead for Aizawl, directly with Silchar in Assam. It establishes the first direct rail link between the capital region of Mizoram and the Barak Valley. The route is part of the Bairabi–Sairang broad-gauge line, which includes the country’s tallest railway pier bridge.
To help passengers with travel permits, the state has integrated the Inner Line Permit (ILP) portal with IRCTC. Trains on this route will have QR codes that allow travelers to register for their permits while they are on the journey. The train timings are also being adjusted to arrive in Guwahati by 4:30 AM to help passengers reach their destinations early.
What new facilities were launched at Guwahati Station?
The Railway Minister inaugurated ‘Blended Hospitality Services’ at Guwahati railway station to improve the experience for travelers. These new additions focus on modern comfort and convenience for everyone passing through the station.
- Sleeping Pods: Secure, air-conditioned pods with charging points, lights, and ventilation.
- AC Lounge: A premium waiting area designed for passengers who want to relax before their train.
- Multi-cuisine Restaurant: A dedicated dining area offering various food options for paid users.
- Ladies’ Powder Room: A special facility designed specifically for female travelers.
How will this benefit the local people?
The new train service is expected to bring significant economic benefits to the region. It will lower the transport costs for agricultural items, such as ginger, which is produced in large quantities in the area. This makes it easier for farmers to send their goods to market.
Students and medical patients will also see direct benefits. Many people travel to Silchar for better education and medical treatment, and this direct train link provides a cheaper and more reliable travel option compared to road transport.
