What’s inside:

This article talks about India’s new rail links with Bhutan, aimed at improving trade and connectivity.

The Indian government has announced two new railway links between India and Bhutan. These links, covering a total distance of 89 km, will connect Kokrajhar in Assam to Gelephu in Bhutan, and Banarhat in West Bengal to Samtse in Bhutan. The announcement was made on Monday, with the projects costing around ₹4,033 crore.

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri shared that these railway projects are part of the first phase of improving rail connectivity between the two countries. This follows a memorandum of understanding signed during Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Bhutan in March 2024, and a formal agreement was reached during the visit of Bhutan’s Foreign Secretary to New Delhi.

These new rail links will significantly benefit Bhutan’s economy by providing access to India’s vast railway network. The Kokrajhar-Gelephu link is expected to be ready in four years, while the Banarhat-Samtse line will take around three years to complete. Both lines will be designed to accommodate Vande Bharat trains.

The Kokrajhar-Gelephu link will feature six stations and several bridges, while the Banarhat-Samtse link will have two stations and multiple underpasses. This development will enhance tourism and trade, making it easier for people and goods to move across borders.

In addition to these rail projects, India is providing ₹10,000 crore in development assistance to Bhutan for its upcoming Five-Year Plan. This support aims to strengthen infrastructure and includes ongoing cooperation in rail and road projects. Overall, these initiatives mark an important step in boosting the relationship between India and Bhutan.

Summary:

  • India announced two new railway links with Bhutan.

  • The projects cost ₹4,033 crore and will improve trade.

  • Kokrajhar-Gelephu will take four years; Banarhat-Samtse, three years.

  • Both links will allow Vande Bharat trains to operate.

  • India is also providing ₹10,000 crore for Bhutan’s development plans.
