The Vande Bharat Express, India’s first semi-high-speed sleeper train, is ready to take on long routes. Designed to offer more comfort and convenience, this new train aims to make long-distance travel easier for passengers.
So far, two sleeper coaches have been completed, and 50 more are being built at the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai. The railway plans to launch 10 to 12 sleeper Vande Bharat trains this year, with the first one running on the Guwahati-Kolkata route.
After the inaugural run, these sleeper trains will also appear on tracks in North India, including Haryana. Currently, chair car Vande Bharat trains are operating on the Delhi-Katra route, and there are plans to introduce sleeper services on this route in the future.
The sleeper Vande Bharat has many new features for passenger comfort. It includes semi-automatic couplers to reduce jerks during travel, upgraded pilot cabins, and water-saving toilets. CCTV cameras are installed for safety, and separate berths for pantry and cleaning staff ensure smooth service.
The sleeper version recently completed a speed trial, reaching 182 km/h without spilling any water from glasses placed on the engine. Each 16-coach sleeper train will have 860 berths, and a total of 1,500 coaches are planned for production, ensuring modern amenities like charging sockets and touch-free toilets.
