Kanpur Central railway station will remain completely closed for 24 hours on June 21, 2026. The North Central Railway is doing this to upgrade the signaling and interlocking system. This is the first time since the 2020 lockdown that all train operations at the station will be stopped for a full day.
Why is Kanpur Central closing and what is the impact
The railway is replacing the old mechanical and electric interlocking system with a new computerized Route Relay Interlocking (RRI) system. Deputy CTM Akanshu Govil stated that this upgrade will reduce signal failures and human errors, making train travel safer and more punctual. Around 300 trains will be affected by this closure, including premium trains like Rajdhani, Vande Bharat, Sampoorna Kranti, and Duronto.
