Indian Railways has started taking strict action against passengers traveling with screenshots of digital tickets. A woman was recently heavily fined for showing a screenshot instead of a live ticket. The authorities clarified that unreserved tickets must be shown directly through the registered RailOne app on the mobile device used for booking.

What are the new rules for digital tickets?
The Indian Railways has officially replaced the UTS app with the integrated RailOne super app. Passengers cannot use screenshots or WhatsApp copies of their tickets. To be valid, the ticket must be a live digital copy accessed from the RailOne app on the registered mobile phone. While physical printouts remain acceptable, digital versions must be presented on the original device used for the transaction.
What is the penalty for using ticket screenshots?
Presenting a screenshot or a non-live digital ticket is now treated as traveling without a ticket. Under the amended Sections 137 and 138 of the Railway Act 1989, the minimum penalty for ticketless travel increased from ₹250 to ₹500 effective July 1, 2026. This fine is charged in addition to the actual fare of the journey.
How does the RailOne app booking work?
The RailOne app, developed by CRIS, handles unreserved, platform, and reserved tickets. To prevent people from booking tickets after boarding the train, the app uses GPS. A user must be between 15 meters and 5 kilometers from the station to book a paperless unreserved ticket. The app also provides a 3% discount on digital payments and features like PNR checks and live train status.
