Indian Railways is planning a major technical overhaul of 500 Vande Bharat coaches. The goal is to remove technical glitches and provide a world-class travel experience to passengers. This upgrade will focus on critical systems to make the journey safer and smoother.

What are the key technical changes in Vande Bharat coaches?

The railway board will upgrade automatic doors, the GPS-based passenger information system, and the braking system. A budget of 30 lakh rupees per coach has been set for this replacement work. To prevent trains from stopping due to sensor blocks, new smart sensor guidance and anti-mechanical choke technology will be installed in the doors.

Which railway zones will handle the upgrade work?

Various zones will execute this project, with 232 specific tasks allocated across the network. The distribution of work is as follows:

Railway Zone Responsibility/Detail
Central & Eastern Railway Highest allocation with 48 tasks each
Other Zones Northern, Southern, South Coast, North Central, and North Western
Total Coaches 500 coaches to be upgraded in the first phase

What will be the impact on passengers?

These changes will reduce technical failures and improve safety. According to Aishwarya Sachan, Director Mechanical Coaching, the new door sensors will prevent the entire system from blocking if a passenger tries to force the door open. Additionally, Dilip Kumar, Executive Director of Information and Publicity, mentioned plans to increase the number of coaches on several routes to meet high passenger demand.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How much is being spent on the upgrade of each Vande Bharat coach?

Indian Railways has allocated a budget of 30 lakh rupees per coach for the replacement and rehabilitation of high-value components.

Why are the automatic doors being upgraded?

Currently, if a passenger forces a door open, the sensor system blocks and the train stops. The new smart sensor guidance and anti-mechanical choke technology will prevent this.
