Indian Railways has hit a monumental milestone in its journey toward a greener and more efficient future, reaching **99.6% electrification of its Broad Gauge (BG) network as of July 22, 2026**. This achievement cements India’s position as the world’s second most electrified large railway system, second only to Switzerland. Union Railways Minister Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed this significant progress during recent sessions in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, highlighting the massive infrastructure overhaul currently underway.
Key highlights of the electrification drive:
- 15 out of 19 railway zones have achieved 100% electrification.
- Major zones now fully electrified include Central, East Coast, Eastern, Northern, South Central, and Western Railway.
- The 740-kilometer Konkan Railway route is now fully electrified, following a project investment of ₹1287 crore.
- Diesel consumption has plummeted from 293 crore litres in 2015-16 to 108 crore litres in 2024-25.
- The network has integrated over 1,260 MW of renewable energy capacity as of June 2026.
Progress Across Zones and Environmental Impact
While the majority of the network is complete, work is in the final stages for the remaining four zones. As of May 31, 2026, only 269 route kilometers across five states are left to be electrified. Currently, North Western Railway stands at 99.8%, Northeast Frontier Railway and Southern Railway are at 98.7%, and South Western Railway is at 96.1%.
This transition to electric traction is more than just an infrastructure upgrade; it is a major victory for sustainability. By drastically reducing dependence on fossil fuels, Indian Railways is achieving substantial savings in foreign exchange while simultaneously curbing carbon emissions. The shift is further bolstered by the addition of 1,161 MW of solar power and 103 MW of wind power capacity, underscoring the national transporter’s commitment to clean energy. As the final sections are commissioned, the Indian rail network is rapidly moving toward a fully sustainable and electrified future, ensuring faster and more reliable travel for passengers across the country.
