Indian Railways has achieved a significant safety milestone as the South East Central Railway (SECR) successfully conducted a System Integration Level 4 (SIL-4) trial of the indigenous ‘Kavach’ automatic train protection system. The trial took place on the 25-kilometer Kalmana-Salwa rail section of the Nagpur Division on July 23, 2026. This rigorous testing phase, which lasted 1.5 hours in ‘braking mode on’, confirms the system’s readiness to prevent accidents and enhance passenger safety across the network.

Enhancing Rail Safety with Kavach 4.0
The ‘Kavach’ system acts as a digital safety net for Indian Railways, specifically designed to prevent Signal Passing at Danger (SPAD) and manage train speeds automatically. During the recent trial, the system demonstrated its ability to intervene if a loco pilot fails to respond to a red signal, ensuring trains remain within safe speed limits. Furthermore, the system can transmit emergency SOS alerts to nearby trains and stations, triggering automatic braking to prevent collisions.
This trial utilized the latest Kavach 4.0 iteration, which was approved by the Research Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO) on July 16, 2024. This upgraded version offers increased location accuracy, improved signal aspect information for large yards, and seamless integration with existing electronic interlocking systems via Optical Fibre Cable (OFC).
National Expansion and Investment
Indian Railways is aggressively scaling this technology to improve safety on high-density routes. Kavach 4.0 is already operational across 2,490 route kilometers on the critical Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi-Howrah corridors. The government has shown strong financial commitment to this project, with expenditures reaching ₹3,874.9 crore by June 2026 and an additional allocation of ₹2,066.24 crore earmarked for the 2026-27 fiscal year.
Future expansion plans are already in motion, with approved projects for the Firozpur and Jammu divisions (1,478 route km), the Ambala division (811 route km), and the Ahmedabad division (598 route km). As the national ATP system, Kavach remains a cornerstone of the Railway Ministry’s strategy to modernize infrastructure and ensure zero-accident operations across the country.
