Indian Railways has achieved a historic milestone in cross-border logistics by successfully operating the first direct commercial container train from Kolkata Port to the Biratnagar Custom Yard in Nepal. This landmark journey, which concluded on July 23, 2026, marks the beginning of a more efficient era for bilateral trade. By eliminating the traditional requirement for transshipment at the border, the service ensures a seamless flow of goods that will significantly benefit the economies of both nations.

- The cargo consisted of 40 wagons carrying 1,225 tons of canola.

- The route utilizes the strategic broad-gauge link between Jogbani in India and Biratnagar in Nepal.
A Boost for Regional Connectivity and Trade
This direct service is a direct outcome of the cross-border rail infrastructure inaugurated in June 2023 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the leadership of Nepal. By removing the need for cargo to be handled multiple times at the border, the Ministry of Railways expects a significant reduction in transit time and overall logistics costs. This streamlined process is designed to enhance the reliability and competitiveness of Nepali industries by providing a more secure and faster supply chain network.
Expanding the Transit Network
Officials from both nations have hailed the development as a major step forward. Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, Chief Public Relations Officer of Northeast Frontier Railway, noted that the initiative reinforces India’s commitment to regional connectivity. Similarly, Lok Bahadur Paudel Chhetri, Joint Secretary at Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, highlighted that this development will lead to a substantial increase in trade volumes.
Beyond the current Kolkata-Biratnagar corridor, the new transit treaty also extends its reach to the Kolkata-Nautanwa (Sonauli) and Visakhapatnam-Nautanwa (Sonauli) transit corridors. This expansion is expected to provide businesses with more flexibility and options for moving containerized cargo, further strengthening the economic ties between India and Nepal.
