Indian Railways has unveiled a comprehensive set of operational updates for August 2026, aimed at balancing critical infrastructure development with the growing demand for passenger travel. Following directives issued on July 30 and 31, 2026, the national transporter is implementing temporary station relocations for Chennai-bound services, yard remodeling in Bengaluru, and the introduction of new long-distance special trains to ease congestion.

  • Chennai Egmore redevelopment: Five express trains shifted to Tambaram and Mambalam from August 5 to August 20.
  • Bengaluru yard work: Kalaburagi-SMVT Bengaluru Vande Bharat service diverted to Yelahanka from August 1 to August 3.
  • New connectivity: Special services between Prayagraj and Tirunelveli introduced for August.
  • Digital upgrades: Online luggage booking via IRCTC and a new Tatkal token system at counters launching this month.

Chennai and Bengaluru Infrastructure Projects

To facilitate the ₹840 crore redevelopment of Chennai Egmore Railway Station, which includes the construction of a new foot overbridge, five express trains will have their operations temporarily moved. Between August 5 and 20, 2026, services such as the Thanjavur-Chennai Egmore Uzhavan Express and the Mangaluru Central-Chennai Egmore Express will be short-terminated or originate from Tambaram. Similarly, the Tiruchy-Egmore Rockfort Express will be handled at Mambalam. Additionally, the Ahmedabad-Tiruchy Weekly Special will bypass Egmore and Tambaram, diverting via Kancheepuram on specific dates.

In Bengaluru, yard remodeling at KSR Bengaluru Station is causing temporary changes. The Kalaburagi-SMVT Bengaluru Vande Bharat Express (Train 22231) will terminate at Yelahanka rather than SMVT Bengaluru on August 1, 2, and 3. The corresponding return service, Train 22232, will also originate from Yelahanka on those dates.

New Special Trains and Digital Initiatives

To support high passenger demand, South Central Railway is launching the Prayagraj-Tirunelveli Special. Train 04171 will depart Prayagraj every Saturday from August 1 to August 22, while Train 04172 will depart Tirunelveli every Monday from August 3 to August 24. These trains will feature 3AC, Sleeper, and General Second Class coaches, providing essential connectivity across Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu.

Passenger convenience is also receiving a boost through technology. Starting July 31, 2026, travelers can book extra luggage online via the IRCTC portal, effectively reducing wait times at station counters. Furthermore, beginning August 1, 2026, the West Central Railway Zone is introducing a token system for Tatkal ticket bookings at reservation counters, creating dedicated queues for AC and non-AC classes. These updates precede a broader upgrade of the Passenger Reservation System (PRS) scheduled for later this month, designed to enhance overall booking efficiency.
